Introduction
- Marundeeswarar Temple is a revered temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Vada Iluppai, about 16 kilometers to the west of Kancheepuram, on the banks of the River Palar. This area is situated along the road connecting Kanchi and Arcot.
- Vada Iluppai is also known by other names such as Madhuga Shethram, Dindima Kavi Shethram, and Brahma Vidhyapuram.
- The temple is unique in that Lord Marundheeswarar faces west, a rare feature in Shiva temples. The name Marundheeswarar signifies a doctor who can rescue mankind from all diseases, highlighting the healing aspect of the deity.
- The temple is undergoing restoration, with preparations underway for the consecration of Swarna Akarshana Bhairavar and other deities, including a rare sighting of Swarna Akarshana Bhairavar with his consort.
Puranic Significance
- The Marundeeswarar Temple is believed to be over 1000 years old. One of the unique aspects of this temple is the direct alignment of the image of Anjaneya (Hanuman) facing Dakshinamurti, which is an unusual feature.
- The Brindavanam (memorial) of the great Veda Vidwan, Bramasri Kumaraswami Deekshithar is also located here, adding to the temple’s spiritual significance.
- The temple is undergoing further expansion, with the construction of the shrines dedicated to Ishwarya, Anjaneya, and Dharma Sastha, as well as the construction of a new compound wall.
- Devotees particularly perform pujas on Sundays for Hanuman, who is believed to appear in dreams, offering guidance and solutions to their problems. The alignment of Lord Anjaneya and Guru Dakshinamurthy facing each other is considered a powerful remedy for challenges posed by Lord Saneeswara (Saturn), including delays in marriages and issues related to childbirth.
- The temple’s unique arrangement of having Guru Bhagwan and Lord Hanuman together is seen as a divine defense against various adversities in life.
- Arunagirinathar, the famous saint and poet, praised Vada Iluppai, stating that anyone who seeks freedom from the cycle of rebirth should always worship here.
- Over the years, the temple has been visited by several eminent Gnanis, Gurus, Saints, and Vidhwans. Maha Periyava of Kanchi visited this sacred temple multiple times, including in 1984, before the Vasantha Panchami festival.
- According to the words of Shri Chandrasekara Saraswathi Swamigal, Goddess Kamakshi resides perpetually in this temple, showering her omnipotent blessings upon mankind.
- Eminent saints such as Tapovanam Gnanaananda Swamigal, Sheshadri Mahan, Poondi Mahan, and Sri Arunagirinadha Swamigal have performed pujas at this temple.
- As part of the ongoing restoration, the installation of the Sri Chakra for Kamakshi Amman is planned, following the Sri Vidya Mantra Sastra, to enhance the temple’s spiritual significance.
