Introduction
The Padmavathi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Padmavathi, also known as Alamelumangai, the consort of Lord Venkateswara. Located in Tiruchanur, which is 5 km from Tirupati in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, this temple is an important pilgrimage site. Tiruchanur is also referred to as Alamelumangapuram or Alivelumanga Puram.
Puranic Significance
- Goddess Lakshmi, in her incarnation as Alamelu, was born to Akasha Raja, the ruler of the region. She later married Lord Venkateswara of Tirupati.
- It is said that Goddess Lakshmi gave darshan to Lord Venkateswara on a red Lotus flower (Padma) in Alarmelu Mangapuram, after his deep penance of twelve years.
- Padmasarovaram, the holy tank of the temple, is believed to be the place where Goddess Padmavathi manifested in a golden lotus.
- The event of her manifestation is described in the Padma Purana, where it is stated that Lord Suryanarayana played a key role in making the lotus blossom in full splendor.
- The Goddess manifested in Karthika month, on Sukla Paksha Panchami, with the star Uttara Shada in the ascendant.
- The Brahmotsavam of Goddess Padmavathi is celebrated with great grandeur to commemorate her divine incarnation and marriage to Lord Srinivasa.

- Padmavathi, or Alamelumanga, is the main deity of the temple and is the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, who is the consort of Lord Venkateswara.
- The deity is positioned facing east.
- Padmasarovaram is the temple’s sacred tank, where the Goddess is believed to have manifested in a golden lotus.
- The temple is under the administration of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
Beliefs
- The temple was originally known as Alarmelmangai Puram, as recorded in ancient inscriptions around Tirupati. Over time, the name evolved to Alamelu Mangapuram.
Festivals
- During the Annual Padmavathi Brahmotsavams, the temple celebrates Chakra Snanam in Padmasarovaram on the last day (called Panchami Teertham).
- On this day, lakhs of devotees gather to take a holy dip in the sacred waters of the tank.
