Puranic Significance

• Nami Nandi Adigal, a great devotee of Lord Shiva, was born in Thiruneiper and became renowned for his devotion and remarkable deeds.
• Daily Worship and Charity: Nami Nandi Adigal was known for his unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva. Every day, he traveled to Thiruvarur to offer worship at the Thiruvarur Temple. His life was also filled with charity, and he sought to light a lamp at the temple as part of his offerings.
• The Miracle of the Lamp: One evening, Nami Nandi Adigal went to a Samanar’s house in Thiruvarur to ask for oil to light a lamp. However, the household, unwilling to provide oil, suggested he light a lamp with water instead. Undeterred, Nami Nandi Adigal bowed to them and prayed.
• In a miraculous turn of events, the water from a nearby pond began to glow, and he took the glowing water to the temple. To his astonishment, the water illuminated the lamp, and it lit the entire temple. This divine miracle earned Nami Nandi Adigal the title of Nayanmar (a saint among the Shaiva devotees).
• Royal Recognition: Impressed by his devotion and miraculous act, the Chola king honored Nami Nandi Adigal with donations and appointed him as the head of temple services, tasking him with overseeing the rituals according to Saiva Agama rules.
• Nami Nandi Adigal’s House: Nami Nandi Adigal’s house in Thiruneiper became a place of reverence and pride. Today, this house has been converted into a small temple dedicated to his memory. It is believed to be around 1000 years old and is considered an important spiritual site for pilgrims and devotees of Lord Shiva.
