Introduction

Ilayankudi is located on the Madurai-Ramanathapuram road. This is the place where Ilayankudi Maranayanar appeared and was saved. There is a shrine to Maranayanar at Italam. In this temple he is given the title of ‘Pacippiṇimaruttuvar’. Not far from the temple is the house where he lived and the cultivated land. The land on which he cultivated is called the “sprouted nursery”. On the day of his Gurupuja, the spinach is made for the Lord of SItalam.

Puranic Significance

Mahaganapati, Venkatesar, ValliDeivanaiSubramaniyar, Byravar, Saneeswaran and ChandranSannathi are inscribed on the wall with great mythological songs related to the history of Nayanar. There is a sculpture of an elephant worshiping the Shiva lingam in the sanctum sanctorum.
