Introduction

The Sita Temple in Sitamarhi, located in Uttar Pradesh, is believed to be the exact spot where she disappeared into the earth, bringing closure to her earthly journey as narrated in the Ramayana.

The temple is uniquely constructed in two layers across three levels, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The upper floor features exquisite paintings and sculptures from the Ramayana, visually narrating the life and virtues of Sita Devi. Descending the steps to the lower level, one reaches the sacred site where it is believed Mother Sita merged with the earth. Here, she is enshrined in a white saree, adorned with a garland, symbolizing purity and peace.

A massive statue of Lord Hanuman stands facing the Sita shrine, representing his eternal devotion.  There is also a separate Hanuman shrine within the temple complex for devotees to seek blessings. In one of the natural cave-like chambers, a Shivalinga with jatamudi (matted locks) and Nandi is enshrined, signifying the divine presence of Lord Shiva in this sacred space.

Puranic Significance

Since Sita was in Lanka, the people of Ayodhya developed a negative opinion about her. To dispel this, Lord Rama made the painful decision to part from her. Following his brother’s command, Lakshmana left his sister-in-law Sita in the forest and returned. Sita, left alone without support, wept in sorrow. The sage Valmiki, who was passing by, heard her cries. He took her into his ashram and offered her shelter. At that time, he was unaware that she was the wife of Lord Rama and that she was pregnant.

Sita gave birth to twin sons, Lava and Kusha. Sage Valmiki taught them all the arts and knowledge. Meanwhile, in Ayodhya, Rama wished to perform the Ashwamedha Yaga (horse sacrifice ritual). He arranged for the ceremonial horse to roam across the neighboring kingdoms. Anyone who stopped the horse had to battle Rama’s army. Only after that could the yagna be completed.

Unaware of this, Lava and Kusha tied the horse to a tree at the ashram. When Lakshmana came in search of the horse, they fought with him and even captured him. Hearing this, Rama arrived, and a fierce battle broke out. Sita was shocked to see her husband there. She pointed to Lava and Kusha and said, “These are your sons,” and handed them over to Rama.

Then, turning to Mother Earth, Sita prayed, “If I am truly pure and chaste, accept me into your arms.” At once, the Earth split open and Sita disappeared into it. A temple now stands at that very spot.
