Puranic Significance

Sri Veera Anjaneyar Temple is dedicated to Lord Anjaneyar (Hanuman), the devoted and powerful servant of Lord Rama. According to legend, after Lord Hanuman’s successful mission to Lanka to meet Mother Sita, he rested on a rock in this area. The rock is said to have a Swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of Lord Hanuman. The temple, which was believed to have been discovered during the Chola period, houses this divine idol of Lord Hanuman, who is believed to bless devotees with strength, courage, and protection.

Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Sri Veera Anjaneyar at this temple can alleviate various struggles in their lives, including:

Many devotees offer tulsi leaves, betel, and vada garlands with sugar flakes (Aval) as nivedhana (offering) and perform special abisheks (rituals) for Sri Veera Anjaneyar. The temple is also known for the unique “butter bath” offering to the deity.

Special Features

  • Five-Foot Long Reclining Idol: The idol of Lord Veera Anjaneyar in the temple is five feet long, reclining on a rock over the Palaru River. The idol is a Swayambumurthi (self-manifested), with Sri Anjaneyar facing Lanka.
  • Sacred Location: It is believed that this is the place where Lord Anjaneyar placed his footprints while traveling to Lanka. The temple is located at the foothills of Govinda Hills and Thadakachi Hills, where Sage Viswamitra performed penance.
  • Divine Spring: A small spring near the temple is said to be frequented by two sacred snakes, which bathe in the spring and then visit the sanctum sanctorum to worship Lord Anjaneyar.
  • Other Shrines: There are shrines dedicated to Lord Yoga Narasimha, Lord Chakarathazhwar, and a twin-faced Lord Vinayaka.
