Introduction

                Yahandar-gu is a small Buddhist temple often compared to an ascetic’s cave, as it sits low to the ground and includes four dark, narrow entrances (now cordoned off with iron gates). Sometimes spelled as Rahanta, the temple was likely built in the Bagan era long after the demise of the Pyu kingdoms (2nd century BCE to the mid-11th century). Inside on the west wall, though not visible to visitors, are two stone slabs featuring eight seated Buddha figures in a row. Unusually, the roof of the temple is corbelled instead of using true arches; this may have been done as the entrances were narrow enough to be bridged in that manner.
