    • Equidistant from Adoor (M C Road) to the northeast and Sasthamcotta to the southeast.
    • Reachable from Kayamkulam, Karunagappally on NH 47, and Kottarakkara via Puthoor or Enathu.

Puranic Significance

  • Temple Structure: Lacks a deity or Sreekovil; features a raised platform (Althara or Mandapam).
  • Worship Practice: Devotees use a mental process called Sankalpam to connect with the divine.
  • Deity: Duryodhana is regarded as the Sankalpa Moorthy, representing a unique form of worship.
  • Mythology:
    • Duryodhana searched for the Pandavas during their exile and sought water from Kaduthamsserry Kottaram.
    • He received toddy from a woman of the Kurava clan and recognized the area’s divinity.
    • He worshipped Lord Shiva on the hill, donating land to the temple for the welfare of his people.
  • Temple Administration: Managed by a committee elected from seven Karas, including representatives from Kunnathoor Taluk N S S Union and S N D P Union.

Beliefs

  • Asura Dosha: Belief that Lord Mahavishnu was afflicted by this dosha, requiring rituals performed by the Velan community.
  • Pallippana Ritual: First recorded instance of this ritual to eliminate evil afflictions, performed every 12 years.
  • Participants: Around 50 members from the Velan community and an equal number from the Purangadi community.
  • Duration: The ritual lasts for 11 days and involves 18 Mahathkarmangal.

    • Public darshan allowed only on auspicious days like Kodiyettu Day and Malakkuda Maholsavam Day.

    • Oorali visits Gurukkalssery Bhagavathy Temple to invite Devi to Malanada.
    • Goddess arrives in a procession and takes her reserved seat.
  • Kettukazhcha:
    • A spectacular event showcasing craftsmanship with displays of Edupu kala and Edupu kuthira.
    • The displays are paraded around the temple three times at sunset.
  • Cultural Programs: Include traditional performances like Kathakali based on stories such as Nizhalkuthu.
