Introduction
Palaganatham is situated along the banks of the Krithumal River, a tributary of the Vaigai River in Madurai. This area is home to the ancient Kothanda Ramar Temple, which dates back 800 years. It is believed that visiting the temple on the day of Punarpoosa Nakshatra brings peace and harmony in life. The location is approximately 10 km from the Madurai Mattuthavani Bus Stand.
Beliefs
The Pandya kings who once ruled Madurai constructed Shiva and Perumal temples in this agraharam area, one of which is the Rama temple. In the southern part of the temple, there is a unique idol of Serpent Vinayaka, known for alleviating the malefic effects of the serpent planets, Rahu and Ketu. It is believed that offering a garland of Arugampul to him during the Rahu period can remove obstacles to marriage. In the sanctum sanctorum, Lord Kothandarama is enshrined alongside Sita, Lakshmana, and Anjaneya. This sacred site has also been graced by the visits of Kanchi Mahaperiyava and Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swami.
Special Features
The people of this area always begin any new work only after offering prayers at this temple. A 12-foot-high wall, a Rajagopuram, a Madapalli, and a Bhajana Math have been newly constructed around the temple. It is considered an excellent place for removing obstacles to marriage, seeking blessings for childbirth, and promoting business growth.
