Puranic Significance
- Origins of the Temple:
- The people of Onnipalayam initially worshipped Amman at the Kothamangalam temple near Sathyamangalam.
- Observing the prosperous lives of the locals, they prayed for a similar blessing in their village.
- A possessed elderly man, believed to be the manifestation of Amman, promised that she would protect the villagers if they built a temple in her honor.
- The temple started as a simple structure with a palm leaf roof, but grew in size as the villagers’ prosperity increased.
- Mother Rajamari Amman is also known as Kothamangalamthukari and Aayiram Kan Mari (Mari with 1000 eyes).
- Karupparayan’s Role:
- Special prayers are offered to Karupparayan during festival days.
- He is believed to help devotees win over their foes and traitors.
- The Story of Lord Vinayaka:
- A gang once planned to rob the temple, but Lord Vinayaka foiled their plans by warning Mother Amman.
- In revenge, the gang beheaded Vinayaka, but Mother Rajamari Amman cursed them to turn into stones.
- The beheaded Vinayaka, known as Thalaivetti Pillayar, is still worshipped in the temple.

- The custodian deity of the temple is Karupparayan, who stands at the temple entrance with a smiling face and long sickle.
- Thalaivetti Pillayar:
- The beheaded Vinayaka (Thalaivetti Pillayar) is a unique feature of the temple and attracts devotees for blessings.
Festivals
- Poochattu Vizhha (Annual Festival):
- Held for 15 days in the month of Thai (January–February).
- Devotees from 8 surrounding villages gather for the festival, as Rajamari Amman is considered the Kuladevatha (family deity) of the locals.
- Badra Kali Amman Puja:
- Puja is offered to Badra Kali Amman every Friday at Rahukalam (10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.).
- Other Regular Festivals:
- Durga, Parvathi, Mahalakshmi, and Saptha Kannikas are worshipped in the prakara shrines.
- Tuesdays and New Moon Days are regularly observed for special prayers.
- Fridays in Aadi month (July–August) are also celebrated with rituals.
