The Mundeshwari Devi Temple, located on the Mundeshwari Hills of the Kaimur plateau near Son canal in Bihar, is an ancient and significant temple with a rich history.

Location: The temple is situated at an elevation of 608 feet (185 meters) on the Mundeshwari Hills. It is located on the Kaimur plateau in Bihar, India.

Historical Significance: The Mundeshwari Devi Temple is considered one of the oldest functional temples in India. It has been an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected monument since 1915. The temple’s history dates back to at least 625 CE, with inscriptions from 635 CE found in the temple complex.

Deities: The temple is dedicated to the worship of Devi Durga. It is believed to have evolved over time, with changes in the presiding deity. The original deity was Narayana (Vishnu), but later, Viniteswara (Shiva) became the presiding deity. The Chatur Mukhalingam, representing Shiva with four faces, holds the central place in the temple today. The main presiding deity now is Devi Mundeshwari, with attributes of Mahishasuramardini.

Architecture: The temple is built of stone and has an octagonal plan, which is a rare architectural feature. It is considered one of the earliest specimens of Nagara-style temple architecture in Bihar. The temple’s shikhara (tower) has been destroyed, but a roof has been built as part of the renovation work. The interior of the temple features niches and bold mouldings with carvings of vase and foliage designs. The temple’s door jambs depict images of Dvarapalas, Ganga, Yamuna, and other deities.

Festivals: The Mundeshwari Devi Temple attracts a large number of pilgrims, particularly during the Ramanavami and Shivrathri festivals. An annual fair (mela) is also held nearby during Navaratri, drawing thousands of visitors. The temple is known for its tantric cult of worship, and an annual celebration called Mundeshwari Mahotsava takes place on April 7 and 8 to mark the importance of the ancient shrine. This festival includes the participation of local artists and is celebrated with great enthusiasm.

The Mundeshwari Devi Temple’s rich history, unique architecture, and religious significance make it a prominent and revered site in Bihar. It continues to be a center of devotion and cultural celebrations.
