Puranic Significance

Hundreds of years ago there lived a merchant from Madurai in a village near Srivaikundam in Tuticorin district. His wife was pregnant. There are not enough facilities in the mother’s home to attend the delivery. Saying this less, the husband and wife continued to beget each other. Saddened by this, they started walking along the bank of the river. “Mom save me” she screamed and fainted. Then an old woman came and carried the pregnant woman to a hut on the bank of the river and gave birth to the woman. A beautiful baby boy was born to that woman. Meanwhile, the businessman is looking for his wife as he is missing. He wandered to many places. At the end, when he came to the Moothalankurichi Riverside and inquired, a girl who came there said, “The girl who was looking for you. She said, “It is in that hut and you will see.”

The merchant ran towards that hut, happy in his heart. There he saw his wife with a beautiful child. He was overjoyed. He raised the child like that and looked up. To the tearful wife, “Who saved you?” He asked. “It was an old woman who hugged me and gave birth to me,” she said. Both of them were waiting for the lady who saw the doctor to tell her and leave. The lady did not come there till night. They waited and fell asleep with the child. Then the businessman had a dream.

One of them said, “I am Gunavathiyamman. I am the one who became your wife and gave birth. Besides that, I was the one who made you and your wife and child look after me as a girl. I want to sit on the banks of the Tamiraparani River to the north. Build a temple for me” she said and disappeared. Accordingly, the merchant, at his own expense, built the temple at the place where Gunavathyyamman had been born.
