Introduction

  • Location: Kottaimedu village, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu
  • Deities: Presiding deity is Lord Shiva as Sri Sangameswarar, and the Goddess is Sri Akilandeswari
  • Historical Background: Situated in central Coimbatore, the temple stands in an area once home to a fort, believed to date back to the Tippu Sultan period. The name “Kottaimedu” reflects the historical presence of a fort, although no remains exist today.
  • City’s Name Origin: Coimbatore was once called “Covanputhur,” likely named after an Irula king, Covan, who ruled the region known as Perur Nadu. Legend says this area once had Sangu flower plants, later cleared to construct the temple, originally named Sangeechuramudayar Temple, now known as Sangameswarar Temple.

Puranic Significance

  • Temple Structure: The temple features an east-facing entrance with a spacious mandapam. Key structures include:
    • Sanctum Sanctorum: Contains sanctum, antarala, and artha mandapam
    • Shrines: Depictions of Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Durgai in koshtam; shrines of Somaskandar, Ambal, Kannimoola Ganapathi, Neelakandeswarar, Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Chandikeswarar, Vinayagar (with Nagar under a Peepal tree), Bhairavar, and Navagrahas in the prakaram
    • Goddess Shrine: Ambal Sri Akilandeswari in a separate east-facing shrine, flanked by Brahmi, Kaumari, Varahi, Vaishnavi, and Maheshwari
    • Murugan Shrine: Arumuga in a separate shrine with a peacock and elephant vahana

Special Features

  • Architectural Highlights: The temple has been recently reconstructed with new stones, and now includes a sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam, and an open mukha mandapam.
  • Design Details: Features a two-tier nagara vimana over the sanctum, with an adhisthana design comprising Upana and Pathabhandha adhisthana styles.
