Introduction
The Keezhakasakudi Sri Adhipureeswarar Temple is a prominent Lord Shiva temple located in Keezhakasakudi village, Karaikal district, Tamil Nadu. Situated about 4 kilometers north of Karaikal on the NH32 highway, this beachside temple is believed to be a site where many sages had a divine vision of Lord Shiva after years of penance. The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Adhipureeswarar (Lord Shiva), and the goddess is Sri Manonmani.
Puranic Significance
- Keezhakasakudi is historically significant, as it is one of the sacred places where Lord Shiva is said to have entered from Kasi. As such, it is also known as Kasiburgudi, further emphasizing its connection to Kasi (Varanasi), one of the holiest places for Hindus.
- The temple is dedicated to Lord Adhipureeswarar (a form of Lord Shiva), and its location near the coastline makes it a serene and spiritual place.
- Keezhakasakudi is also known for its proximity to Melakasakudi, which lies directly west of it, both villages contributing to the temple’s significance.
- The temple, facing east, has a long history, with an inscription indicating that it was originally built by Raja Raja Chola II, the son of Rajendra Chola. It is believed that Raja Raja Chola II restored the dilapidated temple after it had been in a state of disrepair for many years.
- The temple is about 1300 years old, and its construction is attributed to King Rajarajan II, who employed both brick and black brick to construct it in a magnificent manner. A grand five-tiered Rajagopuram (temple tower) stands at the temple entrance, symbolizing its architectural grandeur.
Special Features
- Main Shrine: The temple’s central sanctum houses the idol of Sri Adhipureeswarar facing east, while Sri Manonmani, the goddess, faces south. The altar is made of stone and above it, brick is used in the construction. The sanctum sanctorum belongs to the modern period, reflecting a blend of ancient and contemporary architectural styles.
- Bhairavardani Temple: Located in the north-east of the temple complex, this shrine houses a beautiful statue of Bhairavardani.
- Planetary Symbols: A unique feature of the temple is a square plinth supported by four lions, with eight-lobed stones featuring carved planetary symbols. Atop the plinth is the statue of Lord Sun, facing west and resting on a lotus pedestal. This planetary symbolism emphasizes the connection to astrological and cosmic elements in Hindu temple traditions.
Festivals
The temple celebrates various Shiva-related festivals, particularly Shivaratri, and special prayers and rituals are conducted for the worship of Sri Adhipureeswarar and Sri Manonmani. Due to its sacred beachside location and historical significance, it attracts numerous devotees, especially those seeking spiritual clarity and blessings.
