Introduction
- Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple is a Hindu temple located in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia.
- It is listed in the Malaysian Book of Records as the first and only glass temple in the country.
- The temple was originally constructed in 1922, making it one of the oldest temples in Johor Bahru.
- The land was gifted to the Indian community by the Sultan of Johor.
- Initially a simple hut, the temple has evolved into a grand structure over the years.
- One of its most unique features is the intricate glass work, with over 300,000 Rudraksha beads adorning the walls of the sanctum housing Lord Shiva.
Puranic Significance
- Johor Bahru is Malaysia’s second-largest city, and the Sri Rajakaliamman Temple is one of its oldest Hindu temples, established in 1922.
- Sri Sinnathamby Sivasamy, who inherited the temple from his father, was inspired by glass artwork he saw during a tuk-tuk ride and decided to renovate the temple entirely with glass.
- The temple is covered with 300,000 pieces of multicolored glass and hundreds of thousands of glass beads.
- The temple features statues of various deities, including Gautama Buddha and Mother Teresa.
- After a US$1 million renovation, the temple reopened in 2009 with the glass architecture.
- The main shrine, Athma Lingam Sanctuary, features a lotus for Lord Shiva where devotees pour rose water and offer prayers.
- The temple also contains 10 gold-finished sculptures of deities, including Shiva, Brahma, Hanuman, Durga, Rajakaliamman, Ganesha, Krishna, Vishnu, Sai Baba, and Gautama Buddha.
Special Features
- Nine master craftsmen from Myanmar worked for two years to cover 95% of the temple with finely cut colored glass designs.
- Over 1 million pieces of glass are used in the temple, consisting of six colors: blue, red, yellow, green, purple, and white.
- The temple’s unique glasswork attracts thousands of devotees from around the world.
