Puranic Significance:

  • The story centers around Madakkonar, who struggled for five years without children after marrying Madathi.
  • Madakkonar married a second woman, Valliyammala, in hopes of having an heir but remained childless.
  • A holy figure, Kodangi, visited Madakkonar and foretold the birth of a child in the upcoming year if he sought the blessings of Vijayapathi, a devotee of Lord Shiva, and the goddess Thillai Mahakali.
  • Madakkonar, along with his wives, visited various sacred sites and worshiped, leading to the birth of a son the following year.
  • The family prospered, and a temple was built on the banks of Padangulam, known as Pattangaraiyal, with Thillai Mahakali as the presiding deity.
  • The guardian deities are BhairavarSudalaimadan, and Pechiyamman.

Beliefs:

  • In younger Nainarkulam, it is customary for the eldest children to be named “Thillai” as a sign of the goddess’ grace.
  • The temple is considered the arbiter for matters like buying, giving, or swearing.
  • Devotees often hear sounds from lizards and birds as signs that the goddess is present, responding to the calls for help.
  • People pray for blessings of childrenprosperity, and fearlessness.
  • Devotees offer vastras (clothing) and ornaments to Thillai Mahakaliamman.
