History and Legends:

The Varamoortheeswarar Temple is believed to be around 1,000 years old and holds a rich history.
The temple is part of the Pancha Brahma Sthalams, which are five sacred temples along the banks of the Brahma Aranya River, representing the five faces of Lord Shiva. This temple represents the Sathyojatham face of Lord Shiva.

Pancha Brahma Sthalams:

The Brahma Aranya River, created by Lord Brahma, flows from Andhra Pradesh and merges with the sea at Pazhaverkadu. Sages meditated along its banks and established temples at five locations, containing their meditative powers within Shivalingams. These five temples are known as Pancha Brahma Sthalams.

Significance of the Temple Tank:

There is a sacred pond near the temple, which serves as the temple tank or Theertham. It is said to be built by a local landlord who fulfilled a condition set by a Devadasi (temple dancer). The tank was built in return for her companionship, but when the tank was completed, the Devadasi was found lifeless in devotion to Lord Shiva.

Lord Krishna’s Legend:

Lord Krishna is said to have stood as an Ashwatha tree (Peepal tree) near the temple for 1,000 years. This event occurred as a result of a curse after he brought a Parijatha flower tree from Devaloka.

Sage Romesa’s Penance:

Sage Romesa underwent intense penance under a tree for 100 years, and Lord Shiva appeared before him. The sage requested that Lord Shiva stay at this location forever, and Lord Shiva granted his wish.

Marriage of Goddess Maragathavalli:

The temple has a story about the Goddess Maragathavalli, who was born to King Chithrasenan. Her marriage was arranged in a Swayamvaram, where Lord Shiva arrived on a horse to marry her, much to the king’s surprise.

Beliefs and Worship:

Devotees believe that worshipping Kaala Bairavar at this temple can protect them from the fear of death and extend their lifespan.
The temple is also known for fulfilling marriage prayers and is considered more sacred than Kasi due to the flow of Ganga water in the temple tank.

Special Features:

The temple is south-facing and has been recently renovated.
It has a unique feature of 32 koshtams (shrines) on the outer praharam, though deities are present in only some of them.
