Introduction
Vishnupuram Dharmapureeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Vishnupuram town, Kudavasal circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu.It is believed that Lord Vishnu stayed here for the Lord’s wedding at Thiruveezhimizhalai. Hence it is called Vishnupuram. There are two Shiva temples in this town, Kailasanath Temple and Dharmapureeswarar Temple. In the middle of Agrahara Street, which runs east-west, is the Kailasanath Temple, and on the east side of the street is the Dharmapureeswara Temple, on the banks of a large pond. Here the Primary deity is called as Dharmapureeswarar and Mother is called as Dharmambikai.
Puranic Significance
Suvedaketu was the son of a North Indian king. The astrologers who predicted his horoscope said that he will die at the age of 16. The king consulted the sages and told them with the hope that if they go to the temple of Thiruveezhimizhalai and perform Shiva Puja, they will overcome eternal death. Suvetaketu accordingly came to Thiruveezhimizhalai and worshiped the Lord every day. Days passed. The time has come for Suvetaketu to rejoice. When he saw the life-giving Buddha, he held the Shiva linga tightly.
Emadarman pulled Lord Shiva along with Suvetaketu to wrap the rope of affection thrown by Emadharman. Then Lord Shiva emerged from Shivalingam, kicked him with his foot and protected Suvetaketu just as he protected Markandeya. Then the gods resurrected me at the request and ordered that the devotees should not come to take my life while they were engaged in Shiva Puja. This Vishnupuram is the place where Lord Dharma worshiped to remove the sin of tying the rope on the Shiva Lingam. Because he was worshiped, he called as Dharmapureeswarar.
The temple is said to be more than 1300 years old. Here the Lord’s name is Dharma Pureeswarar, and here Vinayakar’s name is Dharma Vinayagar. On the eastern facade of the temple is an entrance with a shrine. To the east of the Lord, there is a Nandi altar in the hall opposite to him, and on one side there are Nagas. The deity has a shrine towards the south. There is Dharma Vinayagar at the gate of Lord’s shrine. Tenmugan is in Karurai Kottam. There is a Vinayagar temple in the southwest of Prakaram and a Subramanian temple nearby.

It is believed that if you go to this temple as a special prayer and stay that night in this temple and take a bath in the opposite pond in the morning and see the Lord on Pongal, your wish will be fulfilled. For those who worship here, there will be no death, no state of death.
