Introduction

                Virkudi Mayaneswarar Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva, located in the Virkudi village, Nagai circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu.Presiding deity is called as Mayaneswarar in the form of Lingam. The temple with Tulsi as its main tree is Thiruvirkudi, which has to be passed with difficulty on a narrow road; The Mayaneswarar temple is located in the east facing sanctum in the lower part of the Veerataneswarar temple. It is also known as Thirumeignaneswarar Temple.

Puranic Significance 

               This temple is situated under a huge royal tree which is many centuries old. Up to the upper level called prastram is built with black stone and Vimana with brick. The Lord is seated as a slightly larger Lingamurti. The temple is currently without proper maintenance. Thorn plants are growing all around the hall. Thirtha Pond has collapsed sides without sufficient water supply. Adimurthy of Veerataneswarar towards the west, Mayaneswarar seen during the Sankara period. There is Sangu Theertha in front of the west of the temple and Chakra Theertha in front of Mayaneswarar in the east of the temple. The Mayaneswarar Temple is a small temple in front of the Tirtha towards the east. The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old.
