Puranic Significance

The place where Perumal gave Moksha to Gajendran was Supityaranya Shetram. Puranas say that it was here that Perumal taught sages Narada and Bhrigu about the constellations of the planets, their pros and cons, and how Navagrahas relate to human life. Bhukarpa Maharishi enshrined Perumal Thirumeni and established Thirukkulam in his name nearby the temple. That Theertha is known as Poogarpa Theertha. Bhumadevi used to worship Perumal there every day. The astrologers who tell other people about the cycle of planets and its benefits come to this temple to visit Perumal and offer blessings. Sthalam later came to be known as Vilangadu.

Temple destroyed by war:

History tells us that till the time of Vijayanagara kings, five seasons of pujas, pancha season festivals and Brahmotsavam were held in Adimoola Narayana Perumal temple. Vilangadu was severely affected by the conflict between the Puducherry French forces and the British and Arcot Nawab forces. Pujas were stopped during the war. The Adinarayan temple and the residences around it were repaired. Over time, the entire temple fell into disrepair. At some point, the temple disappeared. Later, a cowshed was built there.

Graha dosha Nivarana Sthalam:

A few years ago Ayyappa devotees used to perform puja in Vilangadu area. A devotee became possessed and identified the idols buried in the cow shed. It was revealed that it was an idol of Adimoola Narayan, Sridevi and Bhudevi Nachiyar. The villagers built a hut there and started worshiping the idols. Next, a small temple was erected and Kumbabhishekam was performed. The idol of Utsavar in this temple was brought from Swamimalai. Devotees believe that Adimoola Narayana Perumal, who graces this temple, is the one who cures Graha doshas. That is why many devotees come and go from different parts of Tamil Nadu.
