Pleased with his devotion, the goddess agreed to reside on his head to protect the land from the evil demons.
- Eventually, Goddess Durga slayed Mahishasura, freeing the people of Vijayawada from his tyranny.
- The temple features an enchanting 4-foot-high icon of Goddess Kanaka Durga, where she is depicted in her eight-armed form, each hand holding a powerful weapon. She stands triumphantly over the demon Mahishasura, piercing him with her trident.
