Introduction
Uththani Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva; Located in the Uththani village, Papanasam circle, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. This is a Shiva temple in a small forest area near the Uththani bus stop, the Lord resides under a large tin shed. Uththani is a place where one worships and gets blessings from its curse. There is also Oya Mani Siddhar Samadhi here. It is believed that he lives here in an intangible form.
Puranic Significance
There are idols of Ambikai Periyanayaki and Vinayagar Murugan Mahalakshmi near the Lord. It was a large temple in the 9th century and was destroyed and today only the statues are visible.
The idols of Vaishnavi, Varagi and Indrani were found in a grove. Also, on the top of the statue there are three-faced people with flame confetti, the right forearm is in Abaya mudra, the right hand is holding a knife, the left hand is resting on the thigh, and the left hand is holding Vachirapapa and is standing on a lotus pedestal. It is an innovative work featuring Eriangi Iswarar and Velanar. There is no such statue anywhere else in Tamil Nadu Sukasana Shiva – this statue is also rare.
