Introduction

The temple of Bade Ganesh is located in the temple town of Ujjain and is considered as one of the traditional temples located in the city. Local people call it as Bade Ganesh Ji ka Mandir. This deity is considered auspicious by the local people and thousands of devotees coming from far off places to get a glimpse of Lord Ganesh. The Bade Ganesh Ji ka Mandir Ujjain is situated atop a pond near the Mahakaleshwar Temple. A grand idol of Ganesh is revered in this temple. Local people consider this idol very powerful because it is believed that the wish made in front of this deity is fulfilled in no time. In the premises of the temple, you can learn Sanskrit and astrology, which have been arranged by the temple authorities. There is a huge idol of Lord Ganesh in this temple. Due to which it is called by the name of Bade. Ganesh. This idol of Ganesh installed here is one of the world’s tallest and largest statues of Ganesh.

Puranic Significance

It is said that this Ganesh idol was established by Maharishi Guru Maharaj Siddhant Vagesh Pt. Narayan Ji Vyas. Many types of experiments were done in the construction of the idol of Lord Ganesh of this temple. It is said that this huge Ganesh idol was not made of cement. The idol was built using bricks, lime, and sand. The biggest feature of this statue is that the spice of jaggery and fenugreek was also used in making this statue. Along with this, the water of all the holy pilgrimage sites were mixed in the making of the idol and soil from the seven Mokshapuris namely Mathura, Haridwar, Ayodhya, Kanchipuram, Ujjain, Kashi and Dwarika have also been added, along with elephant emerald, Gaushala clay and gemstones namely diamond emerald, topaz, pearl, brick with rubies have been used. Different metals have also been used to make this statue, such as gold and silver for the face, copper for the ears, hands, and trunk. Iron bars have been used for the feet. It is said that for 13 years after the consecration of the statue, Ganesh Ji remained alive under the open sky without a roof. Previously there was a roof made of tin layers. In 1954 a permanent roof was built. Chola is offered to Bada Ganapati 4 times in a year. It takes 15 days to offer a Chola as the garment is a heavy one. This Chola contains a mixture of 25 kg of vermilion and 15 kg of ghee, which makes this idol even more important. The construction of this statue took about two and a half years.

Special Features

The Ganesh idol at the Bade Ganesh Ji ka Mandir Ujjain is about 18 feet high and 10 feet wide and the trunk of Lord Ganesh in this statue is clockwise. There are a trident and swastika on the head of the statue. A Ladoo is pressed into the trunk rotating to the right. Lord Ganesh has huge ears, a garland around the neck. There is a platter of garland in the upper right hand and Japamudra in the lower right hand and laddu in the left hand. In this temple, statues of many Gods and Goddesses are installed along with Lord Ganesh. The Bade Ganesh Ji ka Mandir Ujjain has a statue of Lord Krishna sitting on the lap of Mata Yashoda and behind him is a very beautiful statue of Krishna Ji playing the flute above Sheshnag. There is also a beautiful statue of Panchmukhi Hanuman, Chintamani in the center of the temple, it is said that this idol was established even before the establishment of Bade Ganesh. Panchmukhi i.e. the face of Hanuman with five faces is as follows: Hanuman Mukha is in the east and Narasimha Mukha in the west, Varaha in the north and Garuda Mukha in the south. The fifth face is upwards which the Hayagriva avatar of the horse is. This statue of Sri Panchmukhi Hanuman with weapons in his hands is very beautiful.
