Introduction
- Location: Trineteshwar Temple, also known as Trinetreshwar Temple, is located in Tarnetar village, Surendranagar district, Gujarat.
- Historical Background: Built by Mihir Bhoj of the Gurjar Pratihar dynasty in the 8th century, the temple is renowned for its architectural style and religious significance.
Puranic Significance:
- Legend and Festival: The temple is closely linked with the legendary swayamvar of Draupadi from the Mahabharata. Arjuna, one of the Pandavas, won Draupadi’s hand in marriage by piercing the eye of a rotating fish using only its reflection in water. This historical event inspired the annual fair held at the Trineteshwar Temple.
- Festival Origins: The traditional fair celebrating Draupadi’s swayamvar began approximately 200 to 250 years ago, with the temple serving as the focal point of these festivities. The festival, held over three days, commemorates this significant event in the Mahabharata.
Special Features:
- Architectural Style: The temple is built in the Gurjar Pratihar style, reflecting the artistic and cultural heritage of the period.
- Holy Kunds: The temple complex is surrounded by three sacred water reservoirs—Vishnu Kund, Brahma Kund, and Shiv Kund. Pilgrims believe that bathing in these kunds is as auspicious as taking a dip in the holy Ganges River.
- Temple History: Originally constructed in the Solanki era (10th century) by King Pratihara, the temple was dismantled in 1898 and rebuilt to its present form. The name “Trinetreshwar” refers to the three-eyed form of Lord Shiva.
Festivals:
- Tarnetar Fair: Also known as “Tarnetar no Melo” or Trinetreshwar Mahadev Mela, this annual fair attracts over 50,000 attendees, including villagers, tourists, and devotees from across India and abroad.
- Significant Celebrations: The fair is held during important Hindu festivals, including Shravan Month and Maha Shivratri. These events highlight the temple’s cultural and religious prominence in Gujarat.
