Introduction
Sundaraperumalkoil Iyarappar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Sundaraperumakoil town, Papanasam circle, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. It is a miracle that the name of a temple has become the name of a town. Here the Lord is called as Iyarappar and Mother is called as Aramvalartha nayaki.
Puranic Significance
Cursed by Rishi, Indra fell ill. To get rid of the curse, he performed linga puja under the vanni tree in Sundaraperumal temple. At the end of the puja, he was going to donate pumpkin to the brahmins, but could not see a single brahmin, then Vishnu, who was living in the valley, appeared in the form of a brahmin and appeared before Indra. It is said that Indra built this temple in gratitude for this.
This place is known as Namasthiga Punniasthalam. On that day the lingam of Indra is called Indaiyarapar. There is one temple on the south bank and one on the north bank of Tirumalai Rajan River which runs from Sundaraperumal temple on the Nallur road in the south. Before crossing the river, there is a small road or temple on the right side of this Iyara temple.
This is a small lingamurti of the Lord – Iyaarapar and Mother Aramvalarthanayaki is in the small temple towards the east, and there is a small Nandi in front of it. At the gate of her womb is the little Saturn. He is enshrined in the small shrine towards the south. On the next bank, in a small copper shed, the Lord is giving grace from a lingam. The Lingam is believed to be 1300 years old.
