Puranic Significance
According to the legend, Bhutaganas laughed to see Lord Shiva’s clothes moving during his Ananda Thandavam. Urudran, enraged at this, ordered them to leave Kailayam. Realizing their mistake, the Bhutaganas did penance towards Perumal. They prayed to Perumal who appeared before them to atone for their mistake. He also asked Bhutaganas to bathe in Adisesha Theertha and worship Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared to the worshipers and forgave them for their mistake. Bhutaganas told Lord Shiva that they wanted to build a temple for Perumal who had helped them. Shiva also allowed it. They built the Jayabhutha Vinayagar temple as a remedy for the delay in construction. They built a temple for Lord Shiva under the tree (Bhuthapureeswarar temple). After that they built a temple for Perumal. It is called Bhootapuri because it was created by goblins; it is called Bhudur because of the worship of Pancha Bhootha. The temple has a western entrance in the east of the town. Bhootapuriswarar is the founder of this temple. Goddess Soundra Nayaki here is housed in a separate temple. This temple is the oldest temple with many inscriptions on its walls.
