Introduction

Brahma Gnanapureeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Korukkai Village near Patteeswaram in Kumbakonam Taluk in Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is Brahma Gnanapureeswarar and Mother is Pushpavalli / Pushpavathi / Pushpambika. The Temple is situated on the northern banks of T.R. Pattinam River.The temple would have faced ruin but for the timely assistance of some good souls. The renovation work was started and the granite structure was carefully handled to remove the deep rooted plants. The work was not fully completed.

Puranic Significance

The temple is facing towards east with an unfinished Rajagopuram. The Nandi Mandapam in this temple has two Nandhis side by side; one facing the Lord and the other facing the Goddess. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of ArthaMandapam, MahaMandapam and Sanctum. The MahaMandapam hosts beautiful and intricate sculptures of Subramanya, Kirathamurthy and AdhikaraNandhi with his Devi.Only one Dvarapala can be seen at the entrance of ArthaMandapam. Other Dvarapala is believed to be stolen by miscreants. Lord is a Swayambhu Murthy. Vinayaga, Dakshinamurthy, Ardhanareeswarar and Durga are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Mother is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There is an open mandapam containing exquisite icons. There is an idol of Korakkar with folded hands in the mandapa. There is an idol of SapthaSwaraVinayakar in the Mandapam. It is a unique idol as it produces the seven musical notes when it is touched with a metal piece from head to toe of this Lord.There are shrines of Vinayaga, Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli&Deivanai, Sun and two Bhairavas (in a single shrine like the Nandis) in the temple premises.

Festivals

Mahashivaratri is grandly celebrated in the temple in February-March. Monthly Pradoshams are also observed regularly
