This place was identified by few Vaishnavas based on Guru Parampara and other references. It was Sri Thirukkovilur Jeeyar Sri Thiruvenkada Ramanujacharya Swamy popularized the site as the Thiruvarasu of Nathamuni in 1993. The land surrounding the holy site was purchased by Sri Pulavar R. Haridas, a Tamil Pandit from Jayamkondam, in the year 2001. He formed Sri Nathamunigal Trust for the construction of Sri Nathamunigal Thiruvarasu.
This site was found to be ruins of an ancient temple that flourished during the reign of Rajaraja Chola. Tradition says that Sri Easwara Bhattar, son of Sri Nathamunigal and father of Sri Alavandar, was the one who installed the deities and performed the final rites to Sri Nathamunigal. Sri Nathamunigal Trust approached Sri Bhashyakara Charitable Trust for the construction of Thiruvarasu. Sri Bhashyakara Charitable Trust took over the construction process in the year 2009. The consecration ceremony-Samprokshanam for the temple is celebrated for three days, July 6-8th of 2012 with special rituals and Vedic and Prabandham recitations.
