- Historical Mentions:
- The place is mentioned as Rishishringapura, Pirishingi, or Hirishingi in two historical records from 1148 and 1186 (Jagadekamalla and Someshwara IV).
- Archaeological studies suggest the temple may date back to the first century AD.
- Sirsangi is prominent for its monuments and temples, and earlier, it was known as Pirising, later renamed Hirising during the medieval period.
- Mythological Significance:
- The temple is linked to a myth involving the saint Vrushya Shrunga, who meditated in the area now called Vrushya Shrunga Tapovan.
- Demons Narundasur, Bettasura, and Nalundasur (also known as Navalagund) disturbed his penance.
- Goddesses Chikkumbasura (Chikkumbi) and Hirekumbasura (Hirekumbi) killed the demons after Vrushya Shrunga’s pleas, and the goddesses later settled in the region.
- As a result, the temple dedicated to Sri Kalika Devi was constructed in Shirasangi.
