Introduction
- Location: Jakhu Hill, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh; 2.5 km (1.6 mi) east of the Ridge, at an elevation of 2,455 meters (8,054 feet) above sea level.
- Significance: An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, notable for its 108-foot-high statue of Hanuman, one of the tallest in the world. The statue was unveiled on November 4, 2010.
Puranic Significance:
- Mythological Story:
- Ramayana Connection: During the Ramayana, Lakshmana, Rama’s younger brother, was injured and fell unconscious. To revive him, Hanuman was tasked with retrieving the Sanjeevani herb from the Himalayas.
- Meeting with Sage Yaaku: On his journey, Hanuman stopped on Jakhu Hill to consult Sage Yaaku about the herb. The weight of Hanuman flattened the mount. Despite the sage’s request to return, Hanuman took the shortest route back to Lanka after fighting the demon Kalnemi, delaying his return.
- Hanuman’s Promise: Upon Hanuman’s departure, an idol of him appeared on the hill. Sage Yaaku constructed a temple in honor of this visit. The temple is believed to have Hanuman’s footprints, and local monkeys are thought to be his descendants.
