Introduction
Sadayarkovil Veninatha Swami Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Sadayarkovil village, Orathanadu taluk, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. The temple has a large compound of one acre, surrounded by a wall, a three-tiered gopuram in the east, and a large pond in front of the temple. Here the primary deity is called as Veninatha Swami in the form of Lingam.
Puranic Significance
The Temple is believed to be 1300 years old. The temple has a big door and a tall copper flagpole, under it there is an altar and a small statue. In front of the flagpole, Nandi Mandapam is designed with four black stone pillars. The Lord’s Sanctum is decorated with beautiful carvings, Cholas period architecture.
A high cement hall is built in front of the Lord. But the work remains unfinished. Here the Lord – Veninathaswami is in the south and north is Durga. To the south-west is the Vinayagar sanctum with its beautiful pillars and next to it is the Murugan valli Deivanai Sanctum with the Arthamandapam. In the north-west there is a lingam in an ancient mandapa and nearby is Ambikai named as Unnamulai Amman. The local people do not seem to visit the temple with interest, the temple is not well maintained and the puja is only a one-time puja is held.
