Introduction

Abaya Anjaneyar Temple is located near the Bathrakali Amman Temple. This temple is also called as Vaal Aruntha Hanuman Temple. The Hanuman in this temple blesses the devotees without his charming Tail. The temple is 2 km far from the north entrance bus stop of Lord Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram. Nearest Railway Station is located at Rameshwaram and Nearest Airport is located at Madurai.

Puranic Significance 

Rama came to Rameswaram for perform prayers and rituals to vanish his sin (Brahma hathi sin) of killing demon king and a Brahmin Ravana. To perform his rituals he needs Shivalinga, so he ordered hanuman to bring a Shivalinga. Hanuman flew to kailash to bring Shivalingam. Though hanuman was late and the auspicious time for the rituals moves on, Rama had finished the rituals to the Shivalinga created by sea sand by his wife Sitadevi, Hanuman brought Shivalinga from kailash and reached the sea shore, when he heard that the rituals were completed, he got angry over Rama’s action and ask him perform pooja to the lingam that he brought. After that he tried to remove the sand Shivalinga by tying his tail over the sand Shivalinga, when he pull it his tail torn apart and he fell down in the shore. The Hanuman in this temple blessed the devotees without his charming Tail.

Special Features

There are 2 Hanuman Statues in this Temple. The main deity in this temple is Abaya Anjaneyar. There is a small statue near the fig tree which is named as Vaal Aruntha Hanuman (Tail less Hanuman) this statue is made up of sea rock, and is said to be Suyambu (self-originated). One can view the impressions of sea shells in this statue. The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old. There is a Theertha (sacred pond) near this temple called by the name Hanuman Theertham or Hanuman Kund.

        Hanuman Jayanthi is celebrated on a Purattasi Saturday in September-October.
