Introduction
Poorthangudi Agatheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Poorthangudi village, Kattumannarkoil circle, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. Poorthangudi is on the tenth km from Kattumannarkoil on the road to Chidambaram via Viranam Lake. Here the Presiding deity is called as Agatheeswarar and Mother is called as Akilandeswari.
Puranic Significance
This is an ancient Chola temple; built with a black stone. The Temple is believed to be 1300 years old. The lord towards the east is named Agatheeswarar. A slightly more beautiful central Lingamurthy, Goddess Akilandeswari has a south facing sanctum. Vinayagar is in the Murugan sanctum at Karurai Gate. There is a long hall in front of the Lord. On one side of it is Alamelu samedha perumal sanctum towards the west. There are also small shrines like Tenmugan and Durgai kala Bhairava Navagraha. There are two ancient Nandis under a bow tree. Outside the temple, there is only a lingamurthi.
