Introduction

The Periyathadagam Anuvavi Subramanya Swami Temple is a significant Murugan temple located in Periyathadagam village, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Subramanya Swami (Murugan) and features sanctums for Valli and Deivanai, along with additional shrines for Shiva, Anjaneyar (Hanuman), Kannimoola Ganapathi, Navagraha (the nine planetary deities), Idumban, and Patha Vinayagar. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and is classified as a primary temple.

Puranic Significance:

• Hanuman’s Thirst: According to legend, while traveling, Hanuman became thirsty and prayed to Lord Murugan. In response, Murugan struck the ground with his Vel (spear), causing a stream of water to gush forth, quenching Hanuman’s thirst. This act is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayana, which refers to the worship of Lord Murugan (Kanda) during the Ramayana period.
• Name Origin: The name “Anuvavi” is derived from “Hanu” (Hanuman) and “Vavi” (spring or water source). Since a spring emerged for Hanuman, the place was initially called Hanuvavi, which evolved into Anuvavi. The hill is also known as “Anumakumaran Malai,” recognizing that Hanuman received blessings from Kumaran (Murugan).

Special Features:

• Ancient Heritage: The temple is believed to be over 1000 years old. An inscription by a Mysore king refers to the spring here as “Kaanachunai.” The holy water from this spring never dries up and continually provides to devotees.
• Rituals and Customs: On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, devotees place a flower on the deity’s head to seek divine approval before starting new ventures.

Belief:

• Blessings for Children: Devotees seeking blessings for children worship here for five consecutive Tuesdays. The temple is also believed to have healing properties, with continuous bathing before sunrise for several days potentially curing mental and skin diseases.

Festivals:

• Kruthika Star Day: Celebrated each month.
• Thai Poosam Day: Special pujas are performed in January-February.
• Panguni Uthiram Day: Car festival held in March-April.
• Kavadi Aattam and Annadhanam: Observed on Mondays and Fridays.
