Introduction

Puranic Significance:

  • Legend:
    • A priest and his wife, who had no children, prayed to the goddess for a child.
    • After receiving a lemon from the goddess and consuming its juice, they were blessed with a son.
    • The boy, however, disappeared when the priest, in a moment of error, opened the temple door after the Ardha Sama Puja.
    • The priest, angered by the loss, prepared seven wooden coffins, placed the goddess statues in them, and buried them in the Cauvery River.
    • The river’s flooding exposed the boxes, which were washed ashore at Srirangam and Upper Chintamani.
    • The goddess revealed herself to a local resident, asking to be consecrated as Ayyalamman in Upper Chintamani.
    • The remaining six boxes were found elsewhere and resulted in other temples: Thiruvarangattu Amman, Sellai Amman, Kanchai Amman, Manikka Nachiyar, and Mannai Amman.
