Introduction
Panangatur Kailasanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Panangatur village, Nagai circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. In the eastern part of Panangatur adjacent to Karaikal road, the temple is located in the banks of Arala River. Here the Presiding deity is called as Kailasanathar in the form of lingam and Mother is called as Akilandeswari.
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 500 years old. Many temples are now dilapidated and lingamurtis are seen here and there. This is a small Shiva temple in Panangatur village, which is illuminated by the Nayak period architecture.
Towards the east the temple is illuminated by a high circular wall, Lord Kailasanatha has an east-facing sanctum and in front of him is a conical canopy mandapam which also has an ambikai sanctum facing south. The Lord has a small and medium-sized lingam. Lord Kailasanathar Lord Akilandeswari is in the Nandi Mandapam outside this Mugha Mandapam. Only Tenmugan is in Karurai Kottam. Vinayagar and Murugan are located in the Prakara temples. Perumal has its own temple in the northwest. In the northeast are Navagrahas Bhairava and Sun. A periodical puja and special pujas are performed on some special days.
