Puranic Significance

The king who ruled Guru Kshetra was Pareesittu Maharaja, also known as Parikshit Maharaja. He ascended the throne of Ashtinapuram after Yudhishthira. Parikshit Maharaja is credited with compiling the Vedas and was the father of Janamejaya. He had four sons: Janamejaya, Bhimasena, Ugra Sena, and Srudha Sena, all of whom performed the Ashvamedha Yaga.

During his 24 years of reign, an incident occurred due to a curse from Nagaraja of Daksasila, who was killed by Takshaka. In retaliation, Takshaka vowed to kill Maharaja’s son, Janamejaya, within a week. To counter this threat, Janamejaya decided to perform the Sarpa Medha Yagya, aiming to eliminate all snakes from the world. However, during the yagya, the sun’s chariot wheel was seized by Takshaka, posing a risk of the sun falling into the sacrificial fire. This event, known as Naga Panchami, is celebrated on the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Avani.

Amidst the yagya, Karkotaka, another serpent, sought refuge with Lord Shiva to escape Janamejaya’s wrath. Shiva protected Karkotaka from Janamejaya’s attack, and as a result, serpents across the world fell into the sacrificial fire. However, Shiva ensured that Karkotaka remained unharmed. Janamejaya, realizing Karkotaka’s repentance, sought forgiveness and built temples to alleviate Sarpa Dosha, the affliction caused by harming snakes. This temple enshrining Lord Shiva is known as Janamejaya Easwaran in honour of these events.
