Introduction
Mahadev temple in Pali, Chhattisgarh is 9th century temple. Pali is situated around 50 kms off from the Korba district on the Korba-Bilaspur road, Originally built by King Vikramaditya of Bana dynasty in 870 – 900 AD and later in 12th century the king Jajwalyadeo repaired it. Temple is situated at the side of a large pond. This east facing edifice built of sandstone on a high platform. Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) with Sikhara (Tower) and an octagonal mandapa (Hall). A small nandi facing the entrance. The sanctum houses a shiva linga. The door entrance to sanctum is adorned with images of Ganga and Yamuna accompanied by dwarapals. The mandapa is decorated with images of Brahma, Krishna, Saraswati, Mahishasurmadni and Gajalaxmi. The architecture of the sculptures carved on this temple is very much similar to the temple of Khajuraho. These sculptures are in ruins state. An ancient Shiva Temple situated in the Northern Part of Central Indian State of Chhattisgarh. This temple, now a protected monument, has some exquisite carvings depicting various deities. Both on the inside as well the outside walls have these sculptures.
