Introduction
Nagapattinam Naduvatheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Melakottaivasal, Nagapttinam circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. As it is located in the middle of Nagai circle and it is the centre of all the temples, this temple is known as Naduvar Koil and Naduvatheeswarar Temple. The Lord is called as Madhyapureeswarar also Known as Naduvatheeswarar in the form of Lingam.
Puranic Significance
According to Thirumal’s advice to create the world after the destruction of the work period, Brahma came to sthalam and installed Shivalinga and Theertha and started his creative career. It is believed that when one anoints this Ema Thirtha to the Lord and gives it to the person; he will get rid of fears and attains the position of Lord Shiva.
The temple is said to be more than 1300 years old. This temple is located on the back street of the National High School, facing east and has a five-tiered gopuram. On the outside of this temple gopuram is Vinayak in the left centre. Beyond the gopuram are the altar and the flagpole, followed by a three-tiered Rajagopuram. There is a sculpture of Brahm worshiping Shivalinga under the flagpole. The east facing Lord is in the beautiful Lingam form. They are called Madhyapureeswarar (Naduvatheeswarar).
