Introduction
The Surya Sadashiva Temple is situated in the Nada Village of the Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka. This temple lies four kilometers away from Ujire town and 12 kilometers from Belthangady taluk. The Surya Sadashiva Temple is dedicated to the deity Surya Sadashiva Rudra Devaru. This is another name for Lord Shiva. The temple is built in traditional coastal architecture.
Puranic Significance
According to Mr. Laurie Honko, world-famous folklore expert from Finland the present age of the temple can be roughly guessed as about 1200 years with the help of his analysis and also with the guidance of folk literature.
The Surya Sadashiva Temple has a unique tradition in which devotees offer clay sculptures to Lord Shiva after getting their wishes fulfilled. The Surya Sadashiva Temple is probably one of its kinds because of this practice. Devotees usually make clay offerings on Mondays along with a kilogram of rice and a coconut. The clay offerings are available at the temple premises and there is an exhaustive list from which one can choose the clay sculpture that’s to be offered to Lord Shiva. For example, a small sculpture of a bride and groom can suggest marriage, and tables and chairs can suggest jobs.
Special Features
According to the tradition, the Surya Sadashiva temple in person after a wish comes true. After offering the principal deity a clay sculpture, you will have to go to another temple nearby to offer prayers. Outside the temple is a kalyani or a stepped well. This well is covered by green vegetation on all sides. A small paved path leads to the well. It has deep blue water
