Puranic Significance

It is said that Shiva got this name from the temple built during the reign of the Pandiya king Veerapandiya. As he was always sitting on the Tamiraparani where the clouds were always swirling, he got the name Mukilvannathar. About 1000 years ago, this temple was very grand. The witness to this is the huge idols of Vinayagar, Bhairava, Sivakami Ammal inside this temple. 200 years ago it was washed away by the river flood. So later those who ruled this place built this temple small and consecrated all the deities in it. Now the temple houses all the deities including Shivalingam, Sivakami ammal and Bhairava. Nandi, who was washed in the Tamirapharani River from this temple, has now been found outside and is believed to be kept in another place in the town. Meanwhile, another sanctum sanctorum in the temple complex houses Lakshmi Narasimha. In Tamil Nadu, Lakshmi Narasimha is found alone in a few places. In that way, Muthalankurichilakshmi Narasimha becomes important. Vinayagar resides between the Shiva temple and the Lakshmi Narasimha. 5 feet tall he is sitting in the sun in the clearing. He is known as ‘Veilugandavinayagar’ and ‘Mukuruni Arisivinayagar’.
