Introduction

Mudukangkulam Ambalavanar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Mudukangkulam village, Virudhunagar district, Tamilnadu. Here the Presiding deity is called as Ambalavanar and Mother is called as Sivagami Sundari. From Madurai, Kariyapatti is 29 km and from there Mudukangkulam is 15 km to reach this place.

Puranic Significance 

Ravana’s wife was Mandodari. When she was a maiden, she sought the guidance of the demon guru Shukracharya to resolve the marriage impasse. Shukracharya advised her to worship Lord Shiva, explaining that there was a pond (a tank with lotuses) in the city of Tenpandi (now known as Thirupandiyur) where a lingam named Ambalavanar was worshipped. Mandodari performed a water ritual and worshipped Shiva in the Mandodari tank. Due to her devotion to Shiva, she was blessed with the fortune of marrying Ravana, who was a devout follower of Shiva. The name Ambalavanar, which means the lord of the temple tank, was bestowed upon Lord Shiva by Chidambaram Nataraja. Similarly, Mandodari was also named Shivakama Sundari. This historical event during the reign of the Pandya dynasty is recorded as evidence of the Pandya’s devotion to Lord Shiva.

Special Features

The Swami is named Ambalavanar, the patronymic of Chidambaram Nataraja. Similarly, Ambal also has the name Sivagama Sundari. The fish symbol of Pandya is engraved as a symbol of its origin in the early Pandyan era. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old.

Kalyana Vinayagar:

Vinayagar seated at the temple gate is called Kalyana Vinayagar. He who is facing north is blessed as the giver of Kalyanavaram. Mandothari was blessed to have a successful marriage so this temple serves as a wedding venue. People of this town conduct marriages in this temple. The pond here is called Sivagami Pushkarani. Apart from this there is also a square well inside the temple.

Sun worshiping Shiva:

On the day of Masi Shivratri, the sun’s light falls on Swami. For this, there is a temple called Palakani in front of Swami Sannidhi. It is good for those who are in Suryadishai and Suryaputhi to visit Ambalavanaswamy on Mada Shivratri and Pradosha day. Worshiping this temple will be beneficial for those who are in government jobs and those who want to move ahead in political life.
