Introduction
Melapoondi Vishwanath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Melapoondi village, Valangaiman circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. The word “Poondi” means “abode” and take it as the Lord’s abode. Melapoondi is a small village, where Lord Vishwanatha resides. Here the Presiding deity is called as Viswanatha and mother is called as Vishalakshi.
Puranic Significance
The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. Here the Lord is towards the East and the Goddess is towards the South. The two sanctuaries were connected years ago by a tin shed. On the front, the Lord is depicted as Rishabh Rudra. There is a slightly larger Ganesha at the front gate and a Dandapani Murugan on one side. Inside, there are Vinayaka and Balasubramani on either side of the Lord. There are no murtis in the sanctum sanctorum; they are kept inside the hall. Sandesar and Tenmugan have built a stage inside. And other deities are Bhairava Surya Saneeswaran, Jyothilingam, Mahalingam and Atmalingam are kept inside the sanctum sanctorum. This Shiva temple may have been in big temple at one time. Now the temple is in dilapidated condition.
