Introduction

Melakurichi Sokkanathar Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva, located in the Melakurichi village, Veppur circle, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. To the west of Melakurichi village there are protected forests. In front of it, there are large gatekeepers at the entrance of Sokkanathar temple in the middle of the parade of snow horses on both sides. Above the gate is a statue of Lord Shiva. Here the Lord is called as Sokkanathar and Mother is called as Meenakshi.

Puranic Significance

The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old. There is a wall made of black stone all around, a big Athima tree in the middle, there is no lingam in the sanctum opposite it, and there is a small statue of Ganesha, a female deity. But on the opposite side there is a Nandi in the hall as before Shiva. There are many maces planted nearby. There is Ganesha in a temple in Prakara, a lingam in outside of the temple and a temple of Murugan in the north-east and Navagrahas in the north-east. He who is in Prakara is like Sokkanatha. This cannot be called a temple, but Sokkanatha calls the Iyanar-like deity in the womb and the female deity next to it as Meenatshi.
