Historical Significance:

  • The Rameshwara Temple was built in 1189 CE during the Hoysala rule. It was constructed by Rama, a Brahmin from the Mane family, and consecrated by the renowned Kalamukha saint Vamashakti of the Kodiya Matha of Balligavi.

  • The temple is located in Kuppagadde Village, about 5 kilometers from Thavanandi, along the Soraba to Banavasi route in Karnataka.

Architectural Features:

  • The temple is oriented towards the east and consists of several sections, including the sanctum, vestibule, ardha mandapa (half hall), and an open sabha mandapa (assembly hall).
  • The sabha mandapa is supported by 24 pillars and features entrances on the north, south, and east sides. Within the sabha mandapa, there is a Nandi sculpture facing the sanctum.
  • The doorways of both the sanctum and vestibule are adorned with intricate perforated screens on either side.
  • Inside the sanctum, the principal deity, Ramesvara, is enshrined in the form of a Linga.
  • The shikara (superstructure) over the sanctum follows the Kadamba style of architecture.
  • The temple features various sculptures, including depictions of Venugopala, Mahishamardini, Ganesha, and the Saptamatrikas (seven mother goddesses).
  • The exterior walls of the sanctum and ardha mandapa have empty niches that may have once housed sculptures or icons.
