Introduction

The Rameshvara Temple in Koodli Village, Karnataka, dedicated to Lord Shiva, holds historical and architectural significance.

Historical Significance:

  • The temple was constructed in the 12th century CE by the Hoysalas.
  • It is protected as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Architectural Features:

  • The Rameshvara Temple follows the ekakuta (single-shrine) architectural style. It consists of a sanctum, vestibule, and sabha mandapa (assembly hall).
  • The temple is oriented to face the east and is situated on a low raised platform.
  • The sabha mandapa, or assembly hall, is notable for its elegant architecture. It has three entrance porches, located on the northern, southern, and eastern sides. Each porch is supported by four lathed-turned polished pillars.
  • The central area of the sabha mandapa is upheld by four central pillars, showcasing fine craftsmanship.
  • A Nandi, the sacred bull and the vehicle of Lord Shiva, is placed on a raised platform in the sabha mandapa. It faces the sanctum, symbolizing the guardian and devotee of Lord Shiva.
  • Inside the sanctum, the presiding deity, Rameshvara, is enshrined in the form of a Shiva Linga.
  • The sanctum features a vesara-style superstructure (shikara), while the vestibule (sukanasi) has a tower that appears as a low protrusion of the main tower over the shrine.
  • The outer walls of the shrine are relatively plain, adorned only with slender pilasters.
  • The temple premises contain three inscriptional stones, adding to its historical significance.

The Rameshvara Temple in Koodli is not only an architectural gem but also a place of reverence and historical importance. It reflects the rich cultural and religious heritage of the region.
