Puranic Significance
- Historical Context: The temple was built by the villagers, many of whom were weavers. The temple was constructed after a tragic event where many villagers died due to the lack of medical facilities.
- Zamindar’s Support: The villagers approached the Zamindar of Avoor for assistance, and funds were raised to build the temple, with Arutprakasa Vallalar contributing to the effort by spreading the word and singing Thiruvarutha to gather support.
- Temple Construction: Initially, a Vel (spear) was placed in a shed as an object of worship. Over time, the temple grew, and idols of Dandayuthapani, Valli Devayani, and Lord Shiva and Parvati were installed.
- Key Features:
- Vel (spear) placed atop the Mahamandapam.
- Peacock altar above the Ardha Mandapam.
- Dwarapalakars (guardian deities) flank the Kajalakshmi shrine.
- Subramaniyan stands in the sanctum, facing east.
Beliefs
- Blessings for Children: Devotees believe that prayers for childbirth at the temple are answered. Boys born are named after Murugan, and girls are named after Valli Deivani.
- Lord Saneeswara Worship: It is believed that lighting a lamp on Saturdays and worshiping Lord Saneeswara (Saturn) at the temple removes evil influences and brings blessings.
Special Features
- Panguni Uttaram Festival: A special worship service is conducted for childbirth at the Idumban Sanctuary during Panguni Uttaram.
- Tirukkalyanam: Couples who have prayed for the removal of obstacles to marriage participate in the Valli Devayanai Sametha Subramanian Tirukkalyanam (divine marriage) on the first day of Panguni Uttaram, offering a gold coin as a gesture of gratitude.
Festivals
- Panguni Uttaram: The festival spans two days, and the Tirukkalyanam (divine marriage of Murugan with Valli) is held during this time.
- Thirukarthikai and Sashti Days: Special anointing services are held every month.
