Introduction
Karambathur Viswanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Karambathur village, Papanasam circle, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. Karambathur village is located on the Papanasam – Chaliyamangalam road after crossing Thirukarugavur and taking the small road on the right. A small beautiful village surrounded by paddy fields, there is a large pond at the front of the town and on the lower bank is the Ayyanar Temple. The Lord has a temple near a huge royal tree on the upper bank.
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old. Here the Presiding deity is called as Lord-Vishwanath, East-facing sanctum sanctorum and Mother is called as Visalakshi, South-facing sanctum. A conical mandapam connects the two sanctuaries. Outside it, the Nandi Mandapam facing the Lord stands on four black stone pillars.
There is a small Ganesha shrine. Opposite Durgai in the north, a large Vilva tree is ripening. Beneath it is a broken birava with beautiful carvings, a linga pot and a Durga statue. There is no Sundesar shrine outside the temple. In the northeast is the Navagraha stage. A cement board wall has been built all around. It has been more than 12 years since the immersion.
