Introduction

The Duladevi Temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, is a notable religious site located in the Kapileshwar Village of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, India.The Duladevi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. The presiding deity in the sanctum is an image of Mahishasura Mardini, a form of Goddess Durga who is depicted with four arms and is often associated with the slaying of the demon Mahishasura. The temple is situated in the Kapileshwar Village, a well-known locality in Bhubaneswar. It is located on the right side of the Duladevi Chowk within the Kapilesvara Village. The temple can be reached by taking the road leading from Lingaraja Temple to the Kapilesvara Village, which is about 500 meters to the southeast of Kapilesvara Temple.

  • Historical Period: The Duladevi Temple is believed to have been constructed in the 18th century CE during the rule of the Bhoi dynasty.
  • Architectural Style: The temple features a pidha vimana (tower) and a frontal porch. The vimana is square in plan, which is a characteristic feature of Odishan temple architecture.
  • Decorations: The exterior walls of the temple are adorned with various decorative elements and sculptures. These decorations include images of vyalas (mythical creatures), nayikas (female attendants or celestial maidens), Nagas (serpent deities), and architectural fragments. The gandi (tower) of the temple is also embellished with lotus designs, adding to its aesthetic appeal.
  • Deity: The central deity of the temple, Mahishasura Mardini, is a significant form of Goddess Durga in Hindu mythology. She is depicted as a fierce warrior goddess who defeated the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
