Introduction
Kannampalayam Dandayuthapani Swami Temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga, located in the Kannampalayam village, Coimbatore district, Tamilnadu. This 150 years old temple is located in the middle of a town; initially it was a small temple where only the statue of Dandayuthapani was worshiped. Kannampalayam is 3 kilometres from the Papambatti on the Coimbatore-Trichy highway
Puranic Significance
At that time, some devotees from Kannampalayam area found it difficult to go to Palani due to their old age. So they prepared a VEL and went to Palani, placed it at Murugan’s feet, worshiped it and consecrated it near the Dandayuthapani idol in their village temple. Marappa Gounder, a monk from this town, who is an ardent devotee of Muruga, stayed at the Palani Swami temple for many years and worked for Dandayuthapani. And the temple administration had given him special permission to perform the Maha Abhishekam worship on one day in the year.
One used to go to Palani on a padayatra carrying a kavadi. He had been going for about 37 years. At some point in his mind, the idea came to him that we should build our temple facing east like Palani temple. In 2012, after participating in Panguni Uthram worship in Palani and returning to the village, they met the elders of the village and took advice from the witnesses and decided to change the east facing temple to the west facing temple. The time it took for the dream temple to take shape was 8 years. Kumbabhishekam was held on 14.05.2021 after the repairs were completed.
Beliefs
The marriage ban will be lifted if the anointing is performed on Tuesdays. The child will be blessed if he comes and worships on Tuesday evening. It is believed that the bride and groom will live well and prosperously if they get married in Swami Sannathi and get a direct view of Arumugam.
Special Features
Upon entering the Rajagopuram there is an announcement about the dress code of the devotees. The royal tower can be reached by climbing 27 steps. The 27 steps are set to represent the star.
Upstairs is a 33-foot flagpole. In the Mahamandapam, there are sculptures of Lord Palani and Arunagirinathar. The spacious Mahamandapam with eight pillars has elephant statues with a yali in each block. Ashtalakshmi swastikas can be seen in the upper canopy as in Palani. Usually in Shiva temples one can see the stream in the upper part of the lingam. But here the stream set above Murugan is extra special.
